The Literary Imagination:
Altered Books, Poetry and Paper Sculpture
For bibliophiles, poets, and other lovers of metaphor. In this course we will play with poetic form, in both the literary and literal sense, shaping the images of our favorite personal and found writings into a beautifully altered artist’s book and paper sculpture. Beginning with writing prompts, cut ups and collage of found text, and an old hard bound book, we will work gradually to create something of both visual delight and personal thematic intrigue, based on the primary images and metaphors emerging from the poetic voice. Please bring one or more favorite poems of personal significance at this moment to the first class. Be aware that in this course will be using sharp tools. Beginning and intermediate techniques for altered book making will be taught. Final pieces will be displayed in the studio gallery.
Purchase Partial Materials List From Melusina Gomez.
After registering, Melusina will contact students for $30 toward shared materials fee. She will bring to class:
1 large container of wallpaper paste or mod podge
1 box of sandpaper
2 tubes of Shoe Goo
2 containers of modeling paste
1 thick hardbound book to alter. An old vintage book is nice, as long as you can sacrifice it, but any solid hardbound book will do. The subject matter is nice to consider, as a layer of meaning, but if necessary any book could work, since we will change it.
