Intuitive Art and Mixed Media Painting
The imagination and the intuitive mind are linked. Imagination is a strong pathway to information that lies below the surface of our everyday awareness. Through imagination and intuition, we may plant seeds of transformation at a soul level and dream new elements and pathways into our lives. This soul-centered painting class focuses on the intuitive and ritual aspects of art making. Starting from a personal question or theme, we will explore the images and insights that come from the unconscious, and give them form. We will work primarily with water-mixable oil paints on Velum, but will also use watercolor. Projects from each class will culminate in a final canvas painting, or series.
Based on the time of year, themes will vary and be organized into 8 week cycles.
Summer’s theme is divination and magic in art, engaging both the personal and collective unconscious. Throughout time, artists have tapped into the collective dream to see, articulate and even impact the most relevant psychic and emotional issues of their culture. They have learned to sense what is and the possibilities of what is to come by relaying messages through the art itself. In our small way, we each have a part to play in navigating and healing the emotional and energetic tides of our time, as well as a strong role in dreaming our own future lives. Participants of this Summer’s course will be encouraged to explore their psychic side, the ancient art of divination, and the language and archetypes of dreaming, as taught in Nahualismo, for the purpose of planting events and intentions to blossom in our waking lives. We will begin by asking personal and group chosen questions, divining with our images and through traditional techniques, using scryer’s ink, tea and seaweed. Through the creative process, we will learn more about the nature of our personal medicine, our best and most enlivening contribution to the time in which we live, find new insights into our individual and collective questions, and finally culminating these insights into creative and enchanting works through our art, empowered by the ancient tradition of the Tol lineage of Mexico.
All levels of experience are welcome. This is not a course on artistic technique, so much as an exploration of process, theme, composition, and the language of images, though techniques from Touch Drawing, Surrealism, and the Expressive Arts will be incorporated.
